Brentwood NY Yellow Pages

The hamlet of Brentwood was originally named Modern Times. Modern Times was a unique community based on individual sovereignty. The town developed its own currency as a reward for labor, which could in turn be traded for goods and other services. The community had no police, courts or other public services. After the civil war, Modern Times’ community based on Mutualism dissolved and the hamlet became known as Brentwood.

Brentwood’s unique beginnings foreshadowed the unique community it has become. Its diversity is celebrated annually at the Brentwood Cultural Street Festival. Modern Brentwood is a rare Hispanic enclave on Long Island, comprising more than 50 percent of the population at the 2000 census. Brentwood is also home to the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, one of the largest psychiatric hospital in the world. Brentwood’s rich, unique history and its diverse modern culture make it a fascinating place to visit and distinguish it from the rest of Long Island.
